Accidentals v Indian Gymkana 4s
By David George
What a pleasure it was to play against Indian Gym. A team pretty much in our own image, of old men and teenagers. In their case, very much older. Which was just as well as we had fewer youngsters on this outing, but how well we played.
Gym were beturbaned and bewhiskered and, ultimately be-bothered, as their sound start came to nowt. They had the pace on us early doors and their 14 year old twice scored from distance on his reverse from shorts. “I wasn’t expecting that”, said Dom, who had earlier equalised from his penalty corner strike. Adam then got us to 2-2 with his first senior goal, popping up at the right time in the right place to deftly finish a move in which his own father had been prominent.
But in the second half, we pulled away. For which we have Milo to thank. Roddy had earlier exhorted us to have self belief in the box. Milo came in from the right along the top of the D and, finding space, swung at full reach with his left hand and deftly chipped the keeper from distance to the sound of jaws everywhere dropping. Awesome.
Milo soon got a second following a move of such purpose that, marking him, I could even hear their very experienced centre forward (editor: very old) willing us on. In his own way, he was as pleased as I was with the goal. We both celebrated it.
But we had the legs on them. DG could get on the pitch, Matt G followed, Matt H and Arthur became dominant and the older lags subbed off to freshen up the team.
We both scored again as we ended up clear and distant winners, moving the ball with greater alacrity. “Work hard and have fun” Worgs has been saying all season. And we have responded by being unbeaten in our last four games have lost 7 of our first 8. Chapeau!
