London Academicals Mens 3s v Barnes Accidentals
Normal match report service resumed after a few weeks' hiatus, which must've disappointed my regular subscribers.
A pleasure it was to play with the sun on our backs. This was a team still missing Rod (and Hugh and Angus) but this week we had Wheeler major and minor (I mean one was born before the other, right?) and Matty George and André umpiring. So things were looking good. Milo's done really well all year, Miguel very capable, where's Matt Howarth? Arthur deserves his position in centre mid. So, yep, feeling good about this one. Oh and we had AJ, too.
Anyway, turns out to be a competitive game. It was felt that we'd played the better hockey but they took their chances better than we did and 2-2 it was. We were never ahead so I guess we showed some resilience. But we went behind on their first attack, smartly taken but we kept chipping away at them on a difficult pitch. A Wheeler boy, can't tell which so we'll share the blame, fluffed the short corner injection several times, the ball dribbling miserably forward a few inches each time; so much for varsity smarts. Then, Worgs did the same, what was going on? DG was an irritant (to them) up front and had his chances. Matt G was sin binned for showing despondency once too often when a decision went not his way - harsh. Jack was all skill, especially turning it on when near his dad umpiring, but got no change out of him! What a pro André is!
They scuffed in a second early doors after the restart when we stopped, anticipating a short we had conceded. Always play on. But AJ retrieved yet another scuffed injection by being quickest to react (yeah, I know) and set up a tap in and the momentum was with us. A second goal made it and a draw was a fair outcome. One more game to go and we need a win to finish 9th not tenth; we deserve that.
